Join me at Meadow Stream Arts in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside as I transform raw sheep fleece into colourful wool locks for needle felting, wool painting and textile art.
In this video, I’m washing, preparing and dyeing locally sourced Valais Blacknose sheep fleece using Jacquard acid dyes. From the sheep themselves to freshly washed wool and beautiful autumn inspired colours, I’ll take you along on the journey from raw fleece to creative fibre.
Autumn has barely kissed us here at Meadow Stream Arts in the Eden Valley, but further into the Lake District her embrace is already more intense. Those changing colours inspire my experiments with wool, texture and dye.
I’ll share how I scour the fleece, carefully rinse and remove excess water, prepare my dyes and use a dedicated craft microwave to fix colour into the wool locks.
Of course, working with colour doesn’t always go to plan! Some unexpected mixing produces black rather than the beautiful shades I had imagined. But experimenting, learning and discovering new possibilities are all part of the creative process.
Welcome to Meadow Stream Arts! 🌿
I’m Debs, a fibre and textile artist living and creating in a small village in the beautiful Eden Valley, Cumbria, close to England’s Lake District.
Inspired by nature, traditional wool crafts and the changing seasons, I explore the wonderful world of fibre and textile art, from raw sheep fleece to finished artwork.
Moving from the fast pace of London to the gentle rhythms of the Cumbrian countryside completely changed how I see the world. My work has become an ongoing conversation with the land, exploring not simply how a landscape looks, but how it feels to stand within it.
