"In my Father's house are many mansions." You've heard it read slowly at nearly every funeral. But the word "mansions" does not appear anywhere in the Greek text of John 14. Not once.
In this video we trace the actual Greek word behind one of the most quoted verses in the Bible — mone, from the verb meno, "to remain." We follow it to the only other place it appears in the entire New Testament, twenty-one verses later, where the direction of the promise completely reverses. Then we follow the word's own paper trail: a fourth-century Latin translator, a network of Roman road stations, and a King James committee working in 1611, back when the English word "mansion" still meant something very different than it does today.
From there the same word pulls all the way back to a garden, to a portable tent in the wilderness, to a Temple too small to hold what filled it, and forward to Pentecost and the final chapters of Revelation — one continuous promise that God has always wanted to dwell with his people, not hand them property.
📖 KEY VERSE
