What happens when a police witness is asked to explain an operation that was supposed to target armed suspects, but suddenly the details surrounding that operation begin to fall apart? In the Cat Matlala trial, defence lawyer Annelene van den Heever pressed a State witness on exactly that question, exposing a series of uncomfortable gaps involving a missing witness statement, a helicopter deployment, surveillance near a suspect's home and the decision to conduct a takedown in a public area. And as the questioning continued, the witness was forced to explain why he travelled all the way from Johannesburg to the R59 engine garage, what exactly he was supposed to confirm when he arrived, and why he never made a statement despite attending several court proceedings.
