How can a low-cost gym have a membership roster far larger than the number of people it could comfortably serve at once?
The easy answer is: because lots of members barely show up. That matters — but it is not the whole business model.
A gym membership is not a reserved spot on the floor. It is recurring access to shared physical capacity across time. In this episode, we use Planet Fitness, Basic-Fit, and other industry evidence to unpack how fixed and semi-fixed costs, visit timing, pricing tiers, extended hours, equipment mix, and peak-hour crowding all shape the economics of a low-cost gym.
The strange part is that more members can improve the economics without creating the same amount of physical demand at the same moment. But the logic has a ceiling: when too much demand arrives at once, the service gets worse.
The roster is not the load. The peak load is the constraint.
