A century ago, women’s swimwear could be policed. Some places regulated swimsuits, and women could be removed, fined, or arrested if their clothing was considered too revealing. The rise of more practical swimwear challenged ideas about how much of a woman’s body could be visible in public. The bikini took this debate even further. Introduced in 1946, it was considered extremely revealing by the standards of the time and quickly became controversial. But fashion changed, and what one generation considered shocking eventually became ordinary. The bigger question remains today: who decides what a woman should wear? From bikinis to sarees and suits, women’s clothing is still frequently connected to ideas of morality, culture, and respectability. If clothing is supposed to determine how “Indian” or “respectable” someone is, should the same standards apply to men?
