THE STORIES
1. Red River Toll (1878): every man who crossed at the Forks paid the ferryman, and some paid more than coin.
2. Forty Days Without Rain (1881): the drought that emptied the stock ponds and tested every outfit on the south bank.
3. Rosa of the Forks House (1883): the woman who kept the lamps lit at the crossing and remembered every face that passed.
4. The Cottonwood at Doan's (1884): one tree at Doan's Crossing and the marks men left in its bark.
5. One Name on the Paper (1885): a trail boss's tally book and the one line nobody wanted to write.
6. Henrietta Road (1886): the wagon road east and the cross that stands beside it.
7. Jubal Pike (1886): a drover buried on the north bank where the herd bedded down.
8. The Ferryman's Bell (1887): the bell at the landing rang in the fog, and the ferryman was not the one who rang it.
9. The Ninth Man (1887): nine saddles on the rail at dawn, eight by nightfall.
10. Twenty Yards of Sand (1887): a sandbar in the middle of the river and the distance a man could not cover.
11. What the North Bank Owes (1888): the ledger at the Forks House and a debt nobody could settle in silver.
12. The Sherman Stage (1889): the coach that left the Forks House and the road that gave it back empty.
13. Where Avery Turned the Herd (1889): the night a trail boss changed course and what it cost the men behind him.
14. Cache Creek: the creek north of the river where something was hidden and something was found.
15. The Lantern at the Landing: one light left burning on the far bank for a man who was late.
16. Call the Roll: the last song names every man in this album, one by one.
ABOUT THE ALBUM
Red River is a concept album of sixteen narrative western ballads. Every song is tied to one river crossing, the Forks on the Red River, and together they follow eleven years in the life of the people who lived, worked and died there. The songs are written and arranged in the style of the Columbia Records western recordings of 1959 to 1965: baritone lead vocal, nylon string and acoustic guitars, upright bass, light brushed drums, male backing harmonies and story first lyrics in the gunfighter ballad tradition.
Total running time: 1:06:31
