Re-pitched SIEGFRIED Nilsson, Soukupová, Windgassen, Adam, Wohlfahrt - Böhm - Bayreuth 29VI66

Continuing my restoration of Karl Böhm's 1966 Bayreuth Ring, I now turn to Siegfried, recorded on 29 July 1966. As with Das Rheingold, a painstaking comparison of the commercial Philips recording with the original radio broadcast, including countless audience coughs, stage noises and other incidental details, strongly suggests that the Philips release derives almost entirely, if not exclusively, from this single performance. Although several tape splices are detectable, I have found no convincing evidence of passages patched in from other performances or rehearsals. The Philips recording also required some minor pitch corrections. Through detailed spectral analysis of the original 50 Hz mains hum, supported by independent musical measurements, I was able to identify and correct small variations in tape speed, restoring the recording to a consistent and historically plausible pitch of A=447 Hz. To preserve the atmosphere of the original live performance, I have also reinstated the applause at the end of each act, taken from the radio broadcast.
