The first time my daughter called me forgetful, everyone at the table laughed. I laughed too. That was my first mistake. Or maybe it was the best mistake I ever made. “Mom, you already told us that story,” Denise said, shaking her head while she reached across my dining table for the cornbread. “I did?” “Twice,” my son Marcus added. His wife, Tasha, covered her mouth like she was trying not to smile. My grandson Jordan looked down at his plate. And my younger sister, Loretta, gave me that soft, concerned expression people use when they want to make you feel fragile without actually saying the word. It was Thanksgiving. I was sixty-three years old. I had cooked almost everything on that table myself. Turkey. Collard greens. Macaroni and cheese. Sweet potatoes. Cornbread dressing. Green beans. Peach cobbler. And somehow, because I had repeated one story about my late husband Franklin teaching Marcus how to drive, everybody suddenly became very interested in my memory. “Getting old, Evelyn,” Loretta teased. She tapped her temple. “Things start slipping.” I remember staring at her finger. Then at her face. Then around the table. Everybody was smiling. So I smiled too. “Maybe they do.” What I didn’t say was that I remembered exactly when I had told the story the first time. Sixteen minutes earlier. And I also remembered why I had told it again. Marcus had changed one detail. The first time, he said his father had taught him to drive in our old blue Buick. The second time the conversation came around, he said it had been the Ford pickup. It was a small thing. Meaningless, probably. But Franklin had never owned a Ford pickup. My brother-in-law had. And I had always been good with details. Not birthdays. Not recipes. Not telephone numbers. Details. Franklin used to say I could walk through a room once and tell you what had been moved when I walked through again.
