Finale (15:12) Oskar Fried, conductor Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Recorded in 1928 at Der Hochschule Raum 1, Berlin One legacy of WWII to modern recording engineers is the loss of all documentation of German recordings made before 1930. We have nothing to tell us where or when they were made, and often even the technology is no longer adequately documented. This means that all of us, even the biggest labels, are working in the blind: only our test equipment and instincts can guide us. The biggest issue we found was the equalization which nobody else had figured out either. Even in the 1920s violins and winds were not supposed to screech on recordings, and we don't believe the original engineers made those kind of mistakes. We believe the present restoration bears this out. All we can do is toss the book and try to reshape this into what the microphone picked up, the same as everyone else who has tried it. Of course any recording by Oskar Fried is worth the effort, and this is no exception. The Firebird was still new music and conductors had to use their sensibilities and skill to execute it. 1928 saw two recordings of this piece. The present one and the composer's own first recording. The original was very, very hissy. We have taken out all we can to get to the noise floor, but there was a lot of baseline hiss which could not be removed.
