Everything around it changes across 2600 years — its rulers, its ideology, its borders, even whether it exists as one city or two. The river bend never does. One of the strangest chapters is how many completely different Berlins have stood on this same ground: the royal capital of Prussia, the decadent metropolis of the Weimar years, the ruined capital of the Third Reich, a city physically split in half by a wall for 28 years, and finally one reunified capital again. In 1945, more than 80 percent of the city center lay in ruins — and yet within decades Berlin rebuilt itself twice, once on each side of the wall, into two competing visions of the same city. The video unfolds in three parts. Part One – Germanic settlers and Slavic fishing villages give way to the twin medieval towns of Berlin and Cölin. Part Two – The rise of Prussia, the Kingdom, the Empire, and Berlin's transformation into a European capital. Part Three – Two world wars, division by the Wall, and the reunified capital Berlin has become today.
