India and China have had a complex relationship shaped by the 1962 war, the border dispute, economic interdependence and rapidly changing military and technological capabilities. But what has fundamentally changed since 1962?
In this conversation, I speak with Lt Gen P R Shankar, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd), former Director General of Artillery, who has extensive operational experience along the Tibet border and deep experience in defence planning, modernisation and defence technology. He is currently a Professor in the Aerospace Department at IIT Madras and is actively involved in applied research in advanced technologies.
We discuss the lessons of the 2020 India China clash, developments along the eastern and northern borders, China’s growing military and technological capabilities, defence spending, demographics, and India’s economic dependence on China.
The conversation also examines whether technology can offset demographic changes and what India’s growing trade deficit with China means for national security.
