The Senate impeachment court could hand down its verdict on the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte by December 16, according to Senate impeachment court spokesperson Reginald Tongol.Tongol said the impeachment court is increasingly confident that it will wrap up the trial before the Senate goes on its holiday recess.Mas malakas po ‘yung confidence ng ating impeachment court na matatapos ito bago mag-holiday recess po ang Senado. So by December 16 ay magkakaroon na ng final verdict,” Tongol said during a virtual press briefing on Friday, Oct. 2.He noted that the trial remains ahead of schedule despite a few days of suspended proceedings.According to Tongol, the accelerated pace was largely due to the prosecution panel’s decision to drop several of its witnesses—a move that saved the impeachment court 27 trial days.The House prosecution panel is expected to wrap up the presentation of its witnesses regarding the unexplained wealth allegations against Duterte by next week.
