What if you woke up on the Titanic at 11:40 p.m., the moment it hits the iceberg? You'd have 2 hours and 40 minutes, and lifeboat seats for only about half the people on board. Here's how the night would play out, minute by minute, and the moves that give you the best odds.
The Titanic carried 20 lifeboats with room for 1,178 people, but about 2,200 were on board. The very first lifeboat, lowered around 12:45 a.m., left with about 28 people in a boat built for 65. The ship was designed to stay afloat with four flooded compartments, but the iceberg opened up five. The Californian, nearby, saw eight distress rockets, but its only wireless operator was asleep. The Carpathia raced 58 miles and arrived around 4 a.m., long after the ship sank at 2:20 a.m., and rescued about 700 survivors, all in lifeboats. Among first-class women, about 3 percent died. Among third-class women, 54 percent did.

What happens in the first 37 seconds, and why almost nobody noticed
The lifeboat math: how many seats there were, and why so many stayed empty
Five simple moves that give you the best odds
Why "women and children first" worked differently from boat to boat
The ships that could have helped, and the one that came too late
The chain of small mistakes that cost minutes
If you woke up on the Titanic right now, what's the first thing you'd do? Tell me in the comments. Coming next: what happens if the Moon disappears.
