Raja Aijaz Ali IPS retired as Inspector General after serving the Jammu and Kashmir Police for over 30 years in 2012. With a degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Raja joined the J&K Police after a brief stint with the Border Security Force. He served on several key positions in the J&K Police including SSP of Budgam, Pulwama and Srinagar, DIG Jammu-Kathua and IGP Crime. During his two terms as the District Police Chief in Srinagar, he handled some of the most challenging situations of his career including a virtual Police mutiny in 1993, a fierce encounter with the terrorists of JKLF (Amanullah Khan Group) in 1996 in which over 30 terrorists and two Police personnel got killed at the Kashmir valley's most revered shrine of Hazratbal. He also dominated news headlines as IGP Crime when one Haji Yousuf, a National Conference worker facing allegations of corruption and political manoeuvring, died in the Police custody a day after he was handed over for criminal investigation to the senior officer at the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's Srinagar residence in 2011. After his retirement from service in 2012, Raja joined Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and contested the Assembly election on the same party's ticket from his some segment of Uri in 2014. In 2018, he resigned from the PDP, joined PC and unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha election in 2019 from the northern Kashmir constituency of Baramulla-Kupwara. Himself a Pahari, he resigned from PC in 2022 and played a key role in winning the Scheduled Tribe status for the Pahari community.
