Located on the Ligurian Sea, Genoa was the capital of one of the Maritime Republics from the 11th century to 1797. It is one of Italy's major economic and productive centers. Its port is, for many reasons, the largest, most important, and most famous in Italy, representing Genoa's major industry as well as one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean and Europe. The historic center of Genoa, the Città Vecchia (Old Town), corresponding to the medieval core, is among the most densely populated in Europe and is known for its characteristic narrow alleys. Part of the historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006. In this first video, we'll take a tour of the "caruggi," the characteristic alleys that make up the historic center, reaching the Palazzo Ducale and the famous Piazza De Ferrari, the beating heart of the city.
