In the spring of 1947, on a stretch of potato fields in Long Island, a builder started putting up houses at a rate no one had ever seen. Thirty a day. Then more. He was not building homes. He was building a machine.
The man was William Levitt, and he did something nobody had done in the history of housing: he put the American Dream on an assembly line. A house every sixteen minutes. Eight thousand dollars, with modern appliances and a television in the living room. Within four years, seventeen thousand families had moved out of New York City and into identical houses on identical lawns — and within a generation, other men had copied the machine in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and California, rebuilding the entire map of the United States and emptying the middle of every city on it.
Then he wrote a sentence into the paperwork that made all of it conditional.
This is the story of Levittown: the suburb that was supposed to be everyone's, and the fine print that decided who it was for.
