I had planned to release my album Morning Moon on Sunday, September 20, which also happened to be our last day in New York. We met up with Karen and walked over to Orchard Street to see if we could get a table at Dudley’s. Somewhere along the way I casually mentioned that my album had just come out. This may have seemed somewhat random to Karen since I’m not sure she even knew I was making one, but she seemed delighted by the news. Luck was on our side that morning. We got a table without a reservation and all ordered ricotta-filled hotcakes. Then Brennan somehow found the Spotify playlist that was playing in the restaurant. He added one of my songs. I had no idea this was something a person could simply do. A few minutes later my music started playing and I became unexpectedly nervous. I had to stop eating. The song played quietly in the background, mixing with conversations, clinking silverware and all the other sounds of a busy restaurant on a Sunday morning. And that was the official public debut of Morning Moon. We toasted with cups of coffee. I relaxed. I finished my hotcake. Join me in this video as I: Walk through Essex Market and eat a tiny smoked salmon sandwich from Café d’Avignon Visit the Comme Des Garçons boutique in West Chelsea Have chicken tikka masala at Chelsea Market Meet the very chic Geraldine Archambault, founder of Essential Parfums, at a work event Discover that Ashley Taylor Brown, founder of Witch NY, and I share several obsessions, namely music, art and perfume Find a beautiful copy of Harold Budd’s Avalon Sutra at Ergot Records We returned to Los Angeles just in time to see Melanie C perform in Hollywood. Brennan had bought the tickets months ago and I had completely forgotten about them. I wasn’t necessarily a big fan before that evening, but she converted me. She sang, danced and moved through new material alongside a few Spice Girls songs with such ease that the entire set was pure pleasure. We’ve been listening to her album Sweat almost every night since. I’ve also been thinking about all of you I’ve met recently. In New York, Los Angeles, Houston and even Marseille. It’s a peculiar thing. Because I share so much of my life here, I imagine that I probably feel somewhat familiar when we meet. What’s harder to explain is that I often feel as though I recognize you too. Maybe it’s simply the familiarity of a conversation we’ve already been having. Whatever it is, these encounters have always been warm and generous and I leave them feeling lucky that this channel has brought so many interesting people into my life. Thank you for being part of it. And thank you to everyone who has listened to Morning Moon. Apparently it sounds quite nice with ricotta hotcakes. #MorningMoon #AlbumRelease #NewMusic #IndependentMusic #LowerEastSide #RecordShopping #HaroldBudd #PerfumeCommunity
