The first start of my Honda NSR500 Rothmans replica—the same specification associated with Mick Doohan’s early NSR500 days. A motorcycle that took years to reach this point.
Here is an interesting backstory about how I got this beauty - When I bought the bike, I was told it was “ready to start”. It wasn’t. It took years to figure it out but on a detailed inspection, the engine contained a circlip where it clearly shouldn’t have been, the NOVA gearbox was missing, the promised 570 barrels were absent, and the wiring was a mess that required a complete rework. In short, it was never really “ready to start”.
This is not my first build, so I know what I’m looking at. What disappointed me most wasn’t just the additional work that was required after paying top money for a bike that doesn’t run, but the lack of accountability when the missing parts and issues were raised to the persons who sold the bike to me and instead of making amends and rectifying the problem with the parts, they chose not to do anything about it.
I believe in doing things honestly and professionally and although this was a super disappointing experience, my hope is that no one else has the wool pulled over their eyes by these people and I want to focus now on the positive and interesting side of this story.
My last resort was to send it to my friend 2 stroke GURU and an RG500 specialist Mr Pete Twist and he is the reason the motorcycle is now alive and running. There were like a mountain of things he had to do on this bike which was shocking and no where to what was promised to me in the original sale. Pete worked on it since October of last year to get it all sorted and I am very thankful to him, he took care of every nut and bolt just immaculate as you can see in the video and it just amazes me how good he is! He rectified all the issues in the motorcycle and made it start, the way it should have been on day 1.
Special thank to ARchie Gee (Lee) who really helped and supported all the way to get this bike running and troubleshooting at various instances, Lee has an amazing RS500 most of you would know and Peter has built so many beautiful bikes that we better stop counting them and currently owns a beautiful bespoke RGV500, you can see them both in the video.
Thanks to Mark Dent at Performance Fabrication for sorting the wiring and those beautiful exhausts.
