Kigali’s busy Prince House–Giporoso–Masaka road is set for a major transformation under an infrastructure project worth more than RWF 130 billion, supported by the governments of Rwanda and China. Officially launched on September 8, 2026, the project covers 10.3 kilometres and will expand the existing two-lane road into four lanes. Planned works include a 1.2-kilometre flyover between Prince House and Cyamitsingi, an underpass, improved junctions, drainage systems, pedestrian walkways and road safety infrastructure. For commuters, businesses and residents along this corridor, the project is intended to address daily traffic congestion, improve access and strengthen transport links between Kigali and eastern Rwanda. In this Rwanda Updates report, we explain: • The road expansion and its planned infrastructure. • The investment of more than RWF 95 billion from China and more than RWF 35 billion from Rwanda, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure. • The role of contractor Hunan Road and Bridge Construction Group. • The expected benefits for commuters, traders and surrounding communities. • Temporary traffic disruptions during construction and the authorities’ call for cooperation. • Practical training opportunities for Rwandans through the project’s Luban road and bridge training programme. At the launch, Minister of State Col. Claudien Bizimungu called for efficient delivery and encouraged the contractor to explore whether work could finish earlier without compromising quality or safety. This was a request to accelerate delivery where technically possible—not confirmation of a revised completion deadline. RTDA Director General Imena Munyampenda emphasized oversight and construction standards, while Chinese Ambassador Gao Wenqi highlighted the project’s contribution to Rwanda–China cooperation and technical skills development. The Ministry of Infrastructure has also asked road users, businesses and nearby residents to follow temporary traffic arrangements throughout construction. Which section of this road causes you the longest delays, and what improvement would make the biggest difference to your daily journey? SOURCE NOTES This report draws on information published by Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure, the Rwanda Transport Development Agency, the Chinese Embassy in Rwanda and Kigali Today’s September 8, 2026 report. Project costs, planned infrastructure and anticipated benefits are attributed to these sources. Expected reductions in congestion and travel costs are project objectives, rather than measured results from a completed road.
