#ScissorCutting #paperartist #ScissorCutting Cut 022, and this one came down to a few tiny feathers. At first glance, this colourful parrot looked like a fairly straightforward newspaper cut. A strong outline, a clear silhouette, and plenty of room around most of the bird. Then there were those tiny feathers sticking out from its back. They’re only a small detail in the original photograph, but once the scissors get close, they become the entire challenge. One slightly impatient snip and they disappear. So the question for this cut was simple: could those tiny feathers survive? Cut: 022 Newspaper: Leidsch Dagblad Date: August 22nd, 2026 Subject: Colourful parrot Difficulty: 7.2 / 10 Cutting time: ± 8 minutes I cut the photograph completely by hand using an ordinary pair of scissors, no cutting machine, no laser, no automated tools. The process is about following the original contours as closely as possible while trying to preserve the details that give the photograph its character. Around the body and tail, the shapes are relatively forgiving. But when I reach the fine feather tips, the pace changes. Those little projections need to remain connected to the paper while the surrounding newspaper disappears millimetre by millimetre. And in the finished cut? The feathers survived. For me, cutting the photograph out of the newspaper is only the first stage. I’ve been collecting and cutting newspaper images for years, and individual fragments like this bird can eventually find their way into one of my handmade collages. Removed from its original article, the parrot no longer has to stay in the park where the newspaper photographer found it. It might eventually appear beside a building, a politician, an aircraft, a musician, or something taken from an entirely unrelated story. That is where these individual cuts begin to create a new reality, fragments of real newspaper photographs brought together in combinations that never existed in the original news. Paper. Scissors.
