The Army's M113 replacement was approved in 2014, eight years before the war. Ukraine didn't cause it. Ukraine made it urgent, and then exposed the one threat it was never built to face. On 14 September 2026 the US Army added $818,355,026 to a single contract with BAE Systems, lifting total AMPV orders past $3.29 billion. The Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle is the replacement for the Vietnam-era M113 armored personnel carrier, and the handover is still running brigade by brigade. The AMPV is a turretless Bradley hull. It shares its 600-horsepower powertrain and suspension with the M2 Bradley and the M109A7 Paladin, so a brigade's command posts, mortar crews and ambulances finally move at the tempo of the tanks they support. The program replaces 2,897 M113s, roughly 30 percent of an Armored Brigade Combat Team's tracked fleet, across nearly 3,000 vehicles built at York, Pennsylvania. There are five variants: the M1283 General Purpose, M1284 Medical Evacuation, M1285 Medical Treatment, M1286 Mission Command and the M1287 Mortar Carrier with its 120mm mortar. The largest buy is Mission Command at 993 vehicles. This was never primarily a troop carrier program. It is a decision to armor the brigade's nervous system and its wounded. This video also covers the alternatives that lost. More Bradleys. The wheeled Stryker. The cancelled Ground Combat Vehicle. General Dynamics and Navistar both declined to bid on 28 May 2014, and BAE Systems won as the sole bidder that December. Meanwhile the donated vehicles are still working. The Pentagon's January 2025 fact sheet lists more than 900 M113s sent to Ukraine. Oryx has visually confirmed over 650 Ukrainian M113 losses. Ukrainian crews run them for casualty evacuation, resupply and troop shuttles, and they do not have enough of them. One accuracy note. The AMPV 30, with its Kongsberg 30mm turret and counter-drone radar, is a BAE-funded prototype delivered to the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood in April 2026. The Army has said it has no plans to acquire this variant. #AMPV #M113 #USArmy
