KSh4.5 BILLION Nairobi Upgrade: Massive Storm Drainage Works Now Taking Shape Along Waiyaki Way

A new look is taking shape along Waiyaki Way near Villa Rosa Kempinski and the GTC Towers, and this time the focus is underground. I walk along the road to document the latest progress on the storm-water drainage works being carried out along this section of the highway. I come across newly installed cylindrical concrete drainage components, sections where drainage channels have already been covered, and other areas where reinforced steel mesh is being prepared before marine boards and concrete are used to form the drainage structure. Further along, workers are welding the reinforcement steel together using a portable generator, while another section has been marked for excavation where a new drainage extension is expected to be constructed. I also find freshly moulded storm-water drainage covers and completed drainage sections stretching past The Mirage and beyond. This work forms part of the wider JKIA–ABC Place highway enhancement, landscaping and beautification project being implemented by KeNHA together with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). The project covers approximately 27 kilometres and includes drainage improvements, road rehabilitation, pedestrian facilities, lighting, landscaping and beautification. Current reports put the project value at approximately KSh4.5 billion. The drainage component is particularly important because authorities have identified the need to improve the highway's ability to handle storm water, including water coming from the Nairobi Expressway.
