A lost Roman roadside story comes to life beside Ermine Street. In Cheshunt Park, the team chases clues that hint at something more than a simple stopover.
Three days, a hidden grid of 1960s trenches, and a geophysics shock reveal a settlement tied to the empire’s main London–York highway. A rough tessellated floor appears where no one expects it. A flue, scorched tiles, and a raised floor whisper of malting and beer. A fourth century kitchen jar turns up in a rubbish pit, while a boundary ditch on a different alignment teases a later chapter. And in the fields, a race pits Roman strings against satellites to set out a marching camp.
Is this a military canteen, a trader’s hub, or a proper pub brewing zythos for passing soldiers? Follow Tony, Mick, Phil, Stuart, and specialists Ros Niblett, Harvey Sheldon, and Peter Reynolds as they line up the agger, locate the ditches, and step inside a public bar that once faced the Roman road. Watch to see how the pieces finally lock into place.
