As the Battles of the Somme and Verdun drew to a close in late 1916, Allied Commanders met to plan a huge Franco-British offensive for the Spring of 1917. The new French Commander-in-Chief, General Robert Nivelle, envisioned driving the Germans from Northern France supported by British attacks in the Artois region, a fight that would become known as the Battle of Arras. Once again, called on to join this fight, would be men of the Australian Imperial Force, who would go into action at a little known place called Bullecourt.
