LYRETH — VESPERS

The crown was never given. It was earned in silence. — VESPER LYRICS — Evening comes. She kneels the same way every night. Grief doesn't count anymore. Lace instead of eyes tonight I don't need to see to pray Thorn instead of gold this time Penance wears a different face Every version I've laid down Gets a candle, gets a sound I whisper till the wax runs dry Another queen I say goodbye Forgive me the crown. Forgive me the fall. I light one more candle for each of them all. I don't confess to a god who's listening I confess to the version of me that's finishing Every night, same lace, same kneel, same prayer Counting the queens I buried somewhere This one wore gold. That one wore red. I remember the weight, not what they said. Penance ain't loud. Penance is small. Just a woman on her knees, saying it all. Forgive me the ash. Forgive me the wall I built out of silence to carry them all. Some nights I forget which one I'm mourning. Some nights it's all of them at once. That's the only night I sleep. I don't wear the thorn crown for the pain I wear it so the grief stays plain So no one mistakes this bowed-down head For anything but a woman and her dead Every queen I've been still kneels through me All at once, or one, or none I stopped counting the night I understood Penance was the only crown that fit for good Forgive me the crown. Forgive me the fall. I am every candle. I am all of them, all. I KNEEL FOR EVERY ONE I BURIED I KNEEL AND I DON'T RISE THIS IS THE ONLY THRONE I NEVER HAD TO COMPROMISE Evening's over.
