Today, I’m walking through Marunouchi — the district between Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace.
Today, Marunouchi is one of Japan’s most important business districts, filled with modern office towers, shops, restaurants, and some of the country’s largest companies.
But this area once looked very different.
During the Edo period, much of Marunouchi was occupied by the residences of powerful feudal lords.
After the Meiji Restoration, the district began to change dramatically.
In 1890, Mitsubishi acquired a large part of the area and began developing Marunouchi into a modern business center.
Western-style brick buildings appeared one after another, and the district became one of the symbols of Japan’s modernization.
The walk begins at Tokyo Station.
Opened in 1914, the Marunouchi Station Building became one of the great landmarks of modern Tokyo.
Its red-brick architecture still stands today, surrounded by the high-rise buildings that now define the city.
From here, I walk through Marunouchi toward some of the district’s most important historic buildings.
One of them is Meiji Seimeikan.
Completed in 1934, the building is an important example of early Showa-era Western-style architecture.
After World War II, parts of the building were used during the Allied occupation of Japan.
Today, it remains one of the historic landmarks of Marunouchi.
The most important stop on this walk is Mitsubishi Ichigokan.
The original building was completed in 1894 and designed by British architect Josiah Conder.
It was one of the buildings that helped shape modern Marunouchi.
At the time, much of this area was still open land.
As more red-brick office buildings appeared, Marunouchi gradually developed into Japan’s leading modern business district.
The original building was demolished in 1968, but it was later reconstructed on the same site using historic drawings, photographs, and surviving materials.
Today, it is home to the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum.
This area is also personally meaningful to me.
When I worked as a wedding photographer, I photographed many couples around Marunouchi and Tokyo Station.
I also had my own wedding photos taken here when I got married.
Tokyo Station is especially beautiful at night, and the area remains a popular location for wedding photography.
The walk ends near the former Tokyo Central Post Office, now preserved as part of JP Tower and KITTE Marunouchi.
From KITTE, you can also see the Marunouchi Station Building from above — a very different perspective from the view at street level.
Throughout Marunouchi, historic buildings stand beside modern towers.
That contrast tells the story of the district itself.
From Edo-period samurai residences,
to Japan’s modernization,
to the Tokyo we see today.
Tokyo Station, Marunouchi, and the Imperial Palace are all within walking distance of each other.
If you visit Japan, I highly recommend taking the time to explore this area on foot.
Thank you for walking with me.
