In this fictional POV story, a former mayor offers a Tennessee small-engine mechanic $50,000 for his shop lot into a microphone, in front of the whole river town, sure the old cabin rules on the bluff ran out in 2001. They never did: one typed page in the county's plat book says the rules renew every ten years, and only the owner of Lot 1 can release them.
You own Lot 1, and you keep quiet. Then the developer files a codes complaint against your yard of old mowers, the cabins on the bluff come down one by one, and more than four hundred people sign a petition telling you to sell. At the city council hearing, his own lawyer reads page fifteen into the record, and then you have to own what your silence cost and decide what you want from the man who called you Grease in tenth grade.
