This video breaks down the last thing Miyamoto Musashi ever wrote, and why being alone is not the same as having nobody around. In 1643 Musashi withdrew to Reigando, a cave in the hills outside Kumamoto. Two years later, seven days before his death in 1645, he handed his student Terao Magonojo two documents: The Book of Five Rings, his manual on strategy, and the Dokkodo, twenty one short lines with no swordsmanship in them at all. The man who fought more than sixty duels and never lost one spent his final week writing about what he had given up. This video takes nine of those lines, follows one invented man, Goro, through a year alone in the hills in 1644 and 1645, and shows what each line asks of someone living now.
If you have ever sat alone for an hour and felt the pull to check something within the first few minutes, you already know the feeling this video is about.
Which of the nine lines has been sitting badly with you since you heard it? Write "the bend in the road" in the comments, so you can find it again later.

Dokkodo.
A note on accuracy: Goro is a fictional character created to carry the story. The historical details, including Musashi's duels, the cave at Reigando from 1643, the two documents given to Terao Magonojo and his death on 13 June 1645, follow published sources. Sources disagree on whether he died in the cave or in Kumamoto, and the video says so. The Dokkodo is quoted in a common English translation, and translations differ in wording.
