Searching for Brandon's Reef

Looked for the elusive Brandon's Reef close to Battery Stream a year or two ago with no luck. Found an account of a trip to the reef dating back to the 1880s that mentioned the turn-off to the workings was by Matthews' woolshed (the Matthews of Waiorongomai Station). An old topomap showed the woolshed west of Whare Hill. I thought I was in business! You'd think a substantial gold workings would be remembered locally150 years later and there'd be a track to it. A pack track, at least, had been cut to the workings but of this there was no sign or a modern trail. Perhaps I gave up the search too easily, but my right boot came off every half every half a dozen or so steps and that began to grate.
