Option Tuning Car Battle Spec R (オプションチューニングカーバトル スペックR) is the third title of Option Tuning Car Battle Series developed by Motorsports Software Technical Office (MTO) exclusively for PlayStation and sponsored by the japanese magazine Option. The game was released in 2000 and in Japan only. We have two game modes: Arcade and Challenge. In Arcade mode we can play up to two players in a normal two-lap race (it is not possible to change the number of laps) or testing our skills by racing against time in TimeAttack mode. There are six tracks (some of them are real) each with two variations and fifty-four cars available to choose from divided into classes and groups. Apart from the modified versions, there are seventy-eight cars in total, but not all are distinct models. The Challenge mode would be our "career mode" because we chose one of the standard cars available in the four groups. After that, we can change its color (each car has only 3 colors) and also its wheels (each group has a different amount of wheels to choose from, and the variety is reasonable). Later we start racing against our opponents and we earn coupons to modify the performance of the vehicle or repair it if we damage it. Our car can be modified in any aftermarket manufacturer, but each one has its own, so that we can have the option of visual improvement we need to achieve maximum performance by equipping all parts. As we race with cars from other groups, the number of races increases and the tracks also change, but opponents are usually the same with little variation from one car to another. To unlock most of cars, you need to complete all stages (cars used by bosses can only be unlocked via cheat code). The first two groups have six races with each car, the third with eight and the last with ten. That means you would have to race 180 times! As I found this somewhat insane, I decided to use the cheat code to unlock all vehicles. For the code to take effect, you need to insert it using the second analog stick. In the main menu, hold L1 + ◎ + △ + ↑. A sound will indicate if the code has been entered correctly. There is no record of sold copies, reviews or notes in Metacritic available for this game. What I have to say is Option Tuning Car Battle Spec R is a good game for anyone who enjoys the culture of japanese cars of the nineties and wants to find out more about lost racing games from PlayStation.
