She grew up with an aunt in Bamako. There she was discovered as an actress and got a movie role. She decided to flee when she was asked to join a French theater company and her parents wanted to prevent her from doing so. She managed, at the age of 20, to get to Paris by herself on a plane. In 2010, then still rather unknown, she was on stage in Hertme. A year later when her first album 'Fatou' was released, she instantly became one of the biggest voices in Africa, after which her career exploded; she played with many musicians and acted in the movie ‘Timbuktu’. After 7 years, her second album ‘Fenfo’ ‘(something to say’) was released. Her themes are women and children, she opposes the circumcision of girls, against bleaching the skin, etc. She stays true to her Wassoulou roots but at the same time breaks new ground.
