One of the 'Great' Preludes and Fugues, the Prelude and Fugue in B minor BWV544 was composed during J.S.Bach's Leipzig years, between 1727-1731.
The Prelude is sombre grandioso style using Italian ritornello features. Tightly woven 32nd note scales, suspensions and dramatic octave pedal leaps, tension building through repetition and appoggiatura harmonies characterise this movement. The opening theme is followed by contrasting fugal episodes.
This performance was recorded during a recital on 18th July 2026 at St Bart's, Wilmslow.
With grateful thanks to Melanie Plumley.
