Texas flooding intensified rapidly this week as the remnants of Hurricane Polo pushed deep tropical moisture into the state, triggering flash flooding, severe storms and two unusual tornadoes in the Panhandle. From dry conditions in North Texas to intense rainfall across the Dallas-Fort Worth area and South Texas, the impacts spread across multiple regions.
The first tornadoes touched down near Claude and Canyon on September 29, both receiving an EFU rating because survey crews found too little damage to determine their strength. Days later, rainfall across the DFW area reached nearly six inches in some locations, causing flash flooding, power outages, sewage overflows, travel disruptions and event cancellations.
In South Texas, storms became especially intense along the Coastal Bend, where rainfall rates reached three to five inches per hour. Additional moisture from the Gulf and a stalled front could still produce more heavy rain through the weekend, with the exact location depending on how the weather system shifts.
In this video, we examine the Panhandle tornadoes, the flooding across Dallas-Fort Worth, the atmospheric setup behind the extreme rainfall, and the continuing threat in South Texas.
Confirmed casualty and missing-person figures are pinned in the comments and updated as official numbers change.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
