Yamaguchi City flourished during the Muromachi period as the stronghold of the Ouchi Clan, one of the most powerful families in western Japan at the time. The Ouchi Clan actively embraced Kyoto’s culture and developed the city into a prosperous cultural center, earning it the nickname “Kyoto of the West.” Yamaguchi Station is also one of the nearest stations to Rurikoji Temple, famous for its National Treasure five-story pagoda.
