How to Paint Light in Watercolor without Using White Paint BRIENNE M BROWN One of the most useful techniques in watercolor painting is learning how to create light by painting around it rather than painting it directly. In this video, I show how I use negative painting to preserve the luminous white tree trunks, bright green leaves, and lighter shapes that bring a landscape to life. CHAPTERS: 00:00 Introduction 00:41 First Wash (Negative Painting Around White Paper) 03:28 Middle Value (Negative Painting Around First Wash) 06:10 Tip on Fixing Unwanted Splatter 06:33 Careful Negative Painting 07:40 Negative Painting Around Foliage 08:33 Adding Texture & Shadow in the Foreground 09:11 Adding Shadows & Details on Aspen Trees 10:23 Negative Painting with Dark Values 11:38 Adding Final Details 12:00 Conclusion Negative painting is an important skill for watercolor artists because it changes the way we see and paint a subject. Instead of focusing only on the trees, leaves, and rocks, I pay attention to the shapes surrounding them. As I build up the light, middle, and dark values, these surrounding shapes help define the trees, strengthen the contrast, and create a greater sense of depth in the forest. Throughout this watercolor landscape tutorial, I work with varied greens and grays, layer darker shapes behind lighter areas, and add subtle shadows to help the aspen trunks feel naturally connected to their surroundings. I also show why negative painting doesn't have to mean painting around pure white paper. The technique works with any lighter shape, making it useful for painting trees, flowers, bushes, clouds, and many other subjects. Whether you're learning how to paint in watercolor for beginners or have been painting for years, I hope this demonstration encourages you to experiment with negative painting and look at your subjects in a new way. You don't have to control every brushstroke or make every passage perfect. Sometimes, the most beautiful parts of a painting come from knowing which shapes to preserve and allowing the light of the paper to shine through. Thank you for painting along with me. Happy painting!
