11. Dodecanese

An amazing trip from the island of the Knights Rhodes and the picturesque Symi, to Patmos and the island of spongers -Kalymnos. Parallel lives, but opposite, at the same time. The well-known shipwrights of Symi were once famous in all the Aegean. Today, both there and in Rhodes, the art of wooden shipbuilding is fading away. Fortunately, in Patmos and Kalymnos the art remains alive and is being passed on from generation to generation. The shipyards are still buzzing with construction activity and the magical creation of beautiful traditional wooden keels. ___________________________________________________________________________ The spot "Dodecanese" was created in the framework of the project "Traditional wooden boatbuilding: boats, tarsanades and karnayia", which was funded by the Operational Programme "Maritime and Fisheries" 2014-2020. The project is an inter-local cooperation between two island Fisheries Local Action Groups in the country, the Development Agency of Cyclades S.A. (as coordinating partner) and the Development Agency of Dodecanese S.A.. The main objective of the project is to highlight the traditional wooden boatbuilding. Wooden boatbuilding is a living traditional art, which has been practiced for centuries in Greece. It presents particular technical, typological and cultural characteristics, some of which have their origins in the Byzantine-medieval period.
