In 1725 and again in 1732, officials of the Habsburg Empire stood over opened graves in Serbian villages and filed official reports about the dead returning. Those reports were printed across Europe and carried a new word into English: vampire.
This is the documented story behind the legend: Petar Blagojević of Kisiljevo, Arnold Paole of Medveđa, the army surgeons who examined the bodies, the philosophers who argued about them, and what those officials were really looking at.
