People will tell you there's nothing out there. Nothing to see, nothing to stop for, nothing worth the detour. This is a proper look at ten South Australian towns that get written off before anyone gives them a chance, scattered across the Far North, the Nullarbor and the old stock routes.
There's a town named after flour, built on a harvest that never came. A railway town on the longest straight stretch of track in the world, where every train crossing the continent still stops for a handful of residents. A mining town that was switched off on an exact date. Opal country where the answer to the summer heat was to dig your home into the hillside. And a creek-side outpost tied to the most famous expedition story in Australian history.
Every one of these places grew out of something real, and when the something left, the town stayed. Some were kept alive by volunteers with paintbrushes, caretakers who refused to leave, and plain stubbornness. The map shows you a dot and a name. It never tells you why the dot is there.
So pull over, and fill up your head. Check your fuel and your water before you head out, and tell me in the comments which of these towns you'd actually stop for.
