Today we're going to be talking about what everyone gets wrong about reference mixes.
For this topic, I was inspired by a recent series of videos where some major mix engineers rated common mixing tips on a scale from 0 to 10.
When mixing with references came up, one of the engineers in this series rated mixing with a reference with an emphatic 10 out of 10!
...But another equally credible and capable mixing engineer rated it as a big fat ZERO.
So who is right?
As always with this kind of thing, context matters. A lot.
There are absolutely ways to use references that are likely to get you great results, and ways of using references that will leave you chasing your own tail, ending up with weak sauce copycat results, or far worse.
So what are the common misconceptions and misunderstandings around mixing with references? That's what we'll talk about today.
