The quiet life lasted until one morning in 1993. A knock came at the front door, and Gennadiy answered it. A uniformed soldier stood on the porch, silent and formal, holding a sealed envelope. Gennadiy opened it and read the service draft notice from the Ministry of Defense. We expect you to be there,” the soldier said before saluting and walking away. Gennadiy felt the same tightening in his chest he had known years ago in the barracks-duty pulling him one way, the safety of his family the other. Memories of war returned at once: the isolation, the discipline, the cold calculation of taking a life. His mind shifted, almost instinctively, back to the soldier he had once been. The next morning, Gennadiy kissed his wife and hugged his son, unknowingly for the last time, before leaving for the Ministry of Defense station. As he walked through the quiet streets, snow began to fall lightly around him. Gennadiy looked up at the pale sky and breathed in the cold air, steadying himself for what lay ahead.
