Experience Tropical North Queensland's dry‑season in Australia with a drive from Townsville to the rainforest township of Paluma, perched high in Mt Spec National Park. This late‑August day trip follows the full story of the range road’s reconstruction after the intense 2025 monsoon, and explores Paluma’s gardens, rainforest trails, and mountain lookouts. Video Sections: 00:01 - Intro 00:35 - Drive from Townsville to Mt Spec Road & Paluma 09:49 - Paluma Village, Ivy’s Cottage, Gardens & Rainforest Walk 24:58 - Ivy's Cottage exterior, drive to Star Valley Lookout & back to Paluma Village 29:29 - Descent & Drive Back to Townsville #australia #tropicalnorthqueensland #queenslandaustralia #queenslandtourism #townsvilleshines #townsville #paluma #mountspecnationalpark We begin in Belgian Gardens, heading north along Ingham Road and onto the Bruce Highway, passing the Northern Beaches, Bluewater, and Rollingstone. The coastal plains gradually rise toward the Paluma Range — the southern edge of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. At the Mt Spec Road turnoff, the scenery shifts to open forest and farmland before the mountains close in. We arrive at the pilot‑car staging area, where travellers gather for the hourly convoy (departing every hour from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.). The escort guides vehicles safely through the damaged sections of the range road. During the 2025 monsoon, the Paluma Range recorded extreme rainfall — more than 4.7 metres (15.5 feet) in Paluma — triggering dozens of landslips and major slope failures. Engineers have spent months stabilising the mountain, rebuilding road sections, and installing protective barriers. Popular stops like Little Crystal Creek and several lookouts remain closed due to ongoing works. At the top of the range, we reach Paluma, a cool‑climate rainforest village surrounded by cloud forest. Our first stop is Ivy's Cottage Rainforest Café for lunch, followed by a wander through its lush tropical gardens — home to riflebirds, honeyeaters, catbirds, and a tapestry of bromeliads and orchids. After dessert, we return to the gardens and connect directly to one of Paluma’s short rainforest loop walks. The afternoon continues with a visit to Star Valley Lookout, offering sweeping inland views, and a slow drive around Paluma’s cottages, gardens, and quiet mountain streets. We finish with the descent down Mt Spec Road — normally one of North Queensland’s most scenic drives, now shared with reconstruction crews and stabilisation works — before returning to Townsville in the warm late‑dry‑season light.
