In 2018, Kilauea opened beneath residential streets in lower Puna, Hawaii. Lava crossed roads, reached the ocean and destroyed more than 700 homes. How did an eruption become a disaster miles from the summit?
DOSS9 traces the fissures in Leilani Estates, the changing magma, a documented drone-assisted rescue, the destruction around Kapoho Bay and the summit collapse. The blue flames in the footage came from burning methane, not blue lava. Official USGS imagery and reports ground this episode; footage from different dates is identified as separate observations.
