Despite the unbreathable air and urban canals transformed into open-air landfills, daily life continues at a frenetic pace. In the alleys of markets and poorer neighborhoods, people crowd the streets without adequate protection. Children continue to play outdoors, often near piles of garbage or stagnant water, ignoring the invisible threat surrounding them. The health consequences for the population are devastating: there is a dramatic increase in acute respiratory infections, chronic asthma, cardiovascular diseases, and eye irritation. The lack of clean drinking water and the precarious sanitation and hygiene conditions in the slums also expose residents, especially children, to serious intestinal infections and communicable diseases.
