Houthi Missile Attack on Riyadh's Airport Kills 3 Saudi Nationals : PAK Ran Away | Prakhar Tiwari | CFTV
Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said on Friday that Thursday's Houthi missile attacks on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport killed three Saudi citizens, among them an airline pilot. Saudia, the national carrier, named him as Captain Hamoud Ali Alkalthami. Dozens of others were wounded, with injuries ranging from minor to severe, and several of those hurt were of different nationalities. The strike also damaged a Saudia aircraft. Saudi media report that airport operations have resumed and air traffic is back to normal.
The attack is one of several Houthi strikes on Saudi airports in recent days. Earlier in the week, attacks on Abha and King Khalid airports killed three civilians and injured 36, and Jazan and Najran airports near the Yemen border were also hit. A Houthi spokesperson said the group fired a ballistic missile at King Khalid Airport. The Iran-backed group has warned airlines to avoid Saudi airspace, except over Mecca and Medina, saying aircraft there are targets. Al Jazeera's correspondent in Sanaa described the campaign as an "airport-for-airport" blockade, which the Houthis say is retaliation for Saudi strikes on Sanaa and Hodeidah airports.
The fighting is escalating inside Yemen as well. Air strikes were reported in Sanaa and explosions in Aden, and the Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed three Houthi rocket launch platforms. Yemeni government forces are carrying out a counteroffensive after the Houthis seized territory along the Bab al-Mandeb Strait last month. The conflict, frozen for years, reignited after the US-Israeli war on Iran. Pakistan and Turkiye have agreed to deploy troops under a mutual defence pact with Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan says it has substantial forces in Riyadh for defensive purposes only. At the UN Security Council, Saudi Arabia and Yemen's government called for action, warning that the Houthi threat extends well beyond Yemen's borders.
