Why Porsche can’t outrun Ferrari and Lamborghini anymore comes down to a single decision made years ago. Porsche chose volume. Ferrari and Lamborghini chose scarcity. The 2026 numbers show exactly what that trade cost.
In 2025 Porsche delivered 279,449 cars, down 10 percent, and its operating return on sales collapsed to 1.1 percent from 14.1 percent the year before, after roughly 3.9 billion euros in extraordinary costs. Ferrari, selling around 13,000 cars a year, posted a 31.2 percent operating margin in Q2 2026. Lamborghini delivered just 5,422 cars in the first half of 2026 and still recorded its best-ever six months, 1.74 billion euros in revenue at a 22.7 per cent operating margin.
This is the Porsche vs Ferrari gap nobody priced in. Porsche built itself into a luxury brand operating at a volume scale, which means fixed costs, dealer networks, tariffs and an EV program all have to be carried by cars people can choose not to buy. Ferrari and Lamborghini never took on that weight. Ferrari’s order book now stretches toward the end of 2027. Lamborghini’s waiting time sits at roughly one year.
Inside the video: the 26 per cent collapse in Porsche’s China deliveries to 41,938 cars, the 22 per cent fall in Taycan demand and Porsche’s removal from the DAX index, and the 6 billion euro goodwill impairment. Volkswagen took on Porsche, and the medium-term margin target was cut to 10 to 15 per cent, with 5,000 further job cuts announced to 2035, and why Michael Leiters is now shrinking Porsche on purpose under a value over volume strategy.
The uncomfortable answer to why Porsche can’t outrun Ferrari and Lamborghini anymore is that it is no longer running the same race.
