In September 1861, Confederate Bishop-General Leonidas Polk occupied Columbus, Kentucky on his own authority — and handed the Union a border state the Confederacy never got back. Kentucky had declared neutrality. Lincoln and Jefferson Davis both wanted that neutrality left alone. Polk ignored Richmond, seized the Mississippi bluffs, and within two weeks the Kentucky legislature invited Federal troops in. Grant took Paducah. The Ohio River barrier collapsed. Five months later came Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. This is the political catastrophe that opened the Western Theater — and why almost nobody remembers the man who caused it.
