Narration: Kavita (the sister-in-law) and her sister-in-law, Megha, are returning home through the market, carrying an old vegetable bag. Inside the house, Shobha (the mother-in-law) and Mahesh (the father-in-law) are sitting, chatting with their neighbor, Shobhana.
Shobhana (45, cheerfully): My family has made some grand plans for this Diwali! My daughter-in-law is going to make sweets from pure khoya (milk solids) right here at home. And that’s not all—we’re also going to buy plenty of expensive sweets from a big shop in the city. After all, Diwali just wouldn’t be the same without sweets!
Shobha (50, sadly): You’re absolutely right, dear. Even those who don’t eat sweets throughout the rest of the year make sure to have some during Diwali.
Mahesh (54, matter-of-factly): True enough. A festival loses its charm without something sweet—though, of course, everyone’s capacity to spend depends on their own financial means. Shobhana (45, serious): "Yes, you all should also try to have some sweets this Diwali."
Shobha (50, sad): "Yes, sister Shobhana, you’re right. We will certainly try; if God wills it, some sweets will find their way to our home too."
Narration: Kavita and Megha, standing at the doorway, listen quietly to everything Shobhana says. Just then, noticing them, Shobhana speaks...
Shobhana (45, surprised): "Oh, you both are back from the market? Did you go to buy vegetables?"
Megha (23, serious): "Yes, Aunt, we’ve just returned from the market."
Shobhana (45, cheerful): "Alright then, I’ll be off. I have a lot of chores to finish at home."
Megha (23, affectionately): "Stay a while, Shobhana Aunt! Just wait two minutes—I’ll make you some hot tea."
Shobhana (45, with a hint of annoyance): "No, no, never mind the tea, dear. I’ll come by another time; I have absolutely no time right now."
Narration: Shobhana walks out, acting quite pleased with herself, while Kavita grimaces in anger.
Shobha (50, neutral tone): "Did you manage to get the vegetables, dear?"
Megha (23, cheerful): "Yes, Mother. We didn't have much money, but I managed to find some cheaper vegetables at the wholesale market, so I bought them. Some are a bit damaged, but I’ll sort through them and pick out the good ones."
Shobha (50, serious): "Well done. Now, go into the kitchen and get the meal ready."
Kavita (19, angry): "Mother, why does Shobhana Aunt always come around just to show off in front of us?"
Mahesh (54, surprised): "Why, dear? What did she say?" Kavita (19, annoyed): "They’re going to make sweets at their place, and they’ll buy expensive ones from outside—who even asked them about any of this? I absolutely detest this showy behavior of theirs."
Mahesh (54, soothingly): "My dear, they are our neighbors; just let it go. From their perspective, they were probably just sharing news."
Kavita (19, distressed): "But Father, they were clearly trying to belittle us."
Mahesh (54, affectionately): "Oh, come now—there’s no harm in someone mentioning that they’re making sweets for a happy occasion. Don’t take it to heart."
Shobha (50, sadly): "I’d love to have some sweets too, but I suppose it all comes down to one’s own destiny."
Megha (23, sadly): "Mother, please don’t be sad. We can be happy even with a simple, modest meal."
Shobha (50, sadly): "Yes, daughter-in-law—such is the fate of the poor. Some have so many sweets they can’t even finish them, while others long for just a single piece. It’s all God’s will."
Narration: Megha quietly heads toward the kitchen, takes the vegetables out of her bag, and begins sorting through them. Separating the fresh vegetables from the spoiled ones, she starts cooking on the stove. She prepares a simple dry vegetable dish and some rotis. Once the meal is ready, she spreads a tattered mat on the floor outside and sets out plates for everyone.
Shobha (50, worried): "The food is served, dear, but our son Rajat still hasn’t returned. If he were here, we could all eat together."
Narration: Just then, Rajat enters through the doorway—exhausted and wearing soiled clothes.
