In a sleep lab, a volunteer is woken and says "I was awake the whole time", but the brain recording shows they'd been asleep for minutes. Every night you cross from awake to asleep, and you never see the moment it happens. Tonight the Keeper walks the Hall of Lamps, twenty quiet rooms on what really happens in your mind as you fall asleep: where sleepiness comes from, why warm feet help, the sudden twitch, the pictures at the edge of sleep, the minutes that vanish, sleep spindles, the night watch in a new place, rocking, the old first and second sleep, and the deep slow waves.
Nothing to solve and nothing to remember. Let the lamps go out one by one, and drift off whenever you're ready.
The lantern is lit, and the long hall is waiting. Tonight, every lamp we pass will go out softly behind us, one by one.
