3 Grocery Stores That No Longer Exist (And What Killed Them)

#Nostalgia #GoneBrands #Dominicks What happened to A&P, Dominick's and Alpha Beta - three supermarkets that used to be on every corner? All three signs are down, and not one of them lost to the store across the street. This Gone Brands documentary counts down all three and names what actually killed each one. Alpha Beta opened in Pomona, California, put its whole store in alphabetical order in 1915, and grew past 300 stores by 1980 - then its own owner bought Lucky in 1988, the State of California sued, and 142 Alpha Betas went to Ron Burkle, who took the signs down through the summer of 1995. Dominick's Finer Foods was Chicago's grocer, with Heritage House milk in the fridge and a Fresh Values card on every keychain, until Safeway paid 1.85 billion dollars for it in 1998, ran it from California, and locked the doors at noon on December 28, 2013. And the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company - A&P - had 15,737 stores open in 1930, more than Walmart and Sam's Club have today, sold one cup of coffee in seven in 1950, and borrowed 1.3 billion dollars to buy Pathmark in 2007. It went bankrupt in December 2010 and again in July 2015, and by Thanksgiving of that year every store was sold or dark. Eight O'Clock Coffee is still on the shelf. The stores are not.
