I regret not doing this sooner: a solo walk in Yorkshire

I've been in Saltaire, Yorkshire for six weeks and I still hadn't done this walk. I could see these hills from where I was staying every single day. I kept meaning to go. And then it would be 4pm and I hadn't showered and I definitely hadn't left the house — anyone else work for themselves and somehow still find a way to lose track of time? This is my last day here before I head back south, so today it's this walk or it's nothing. Shipley Glen, down into Shipley Gorge, and back along the canal into town. Along the way: stone walls that made me feel like a giddy teenager again, an overly friendly dog who took a real interest in my coat, and a tramway I never once managed to ride in six weeks of living 20 minutes from it. This is what solo walking actually looks like for me most of the time — not a grand adventure, just carving out an afternoon before I lose the chance. I've been working on my health this year too, so there's a bit of that in here as well: why I stopped getting steps without trying once I left the office, and why I'm trying to take movement more seriously in my fifties.
